First Lift-Accessed Mountain Bike Park in the World to Reach This Feat

The Whistler Mountain Bike Park hosted the millionth unique rider today. The first lift-accessed mountain Bike Park in the world to reach this feat, the Whistler Mountain Bike Park is in its twelfth season of operation and is considered the No. 1 lift access mountain bike park in the world. To mark this auspicious occasion, a celebration was held at the base of the Fitzsimons Express chair lift, with a countdown to the lucky millionth visitor hosted by biking legend Brett Tippie.

The lucky millionth guest, Ryan Domm from Edmonton, Alberta, was greeted by confetti guns, and walked away with a prize pack including: a complimentary seasons pass for the remainder of the 2011 season, a seasons pass for the 2012 season, a custom Dakine Whistler Mountain Bike Park 1,000,000 Rider bike jersey, lift line priority for the remainder of the day, a fully guided bike tour from the Whistler Peak Chair, and an après bike celebration at the Garibaldi Lift Company. Riders 999,996 through to 1,000,001, also received prizing.

“Whistler Blackcomb is incredibly proud to reach this milestone,” said Rob McSkimming, Whistler Blackcomb’s vice president of business development. “We would like to thank every rider who helped us make it to one million and we look forward to hosting our next million riders.”

The Whistler Mountain Bike Park is considered the No. 1 lift accessed downhill bike park in the world, offering 4,900 vertical feet of lift-serviced descending trails for thrill seekers of all levels. The world-class Bike Park trail crew is constantly breaking new ground with its design innovation, including the Joyride Productions-designed Boneyard Slopestyle Course. Trails are labeled by level of difficulty from green runs for beginners to blue and black diamond trails for intermediate and advanced riders. Trails range from gentle banked cruisers through the Coastal forest to tight and twisty single track - perfect for intermediate and all-mountain riders. For more advanced gravity junkies, there are steep rock faces, gnarly root-strewn lines, drop-offs of all shapes and sizes and more. The Whistler Mountain Bike Park is open May to October.

'Only a million?' take a second to consider how big a number that is. If you count to it without ever stopping it would take over 11 days. Or, in perhaps more relevant terms, if there were 1 million people in the line to buy tickets it would be over 180 miles long (almost to Seattle).

1 million is big

Is it 1,000,000 individual RIDERs, or 1,000,000 lift passes bought?

A visit counts as your first scan of the day no matter if you have a Season Pass, Triple Play Card or day ticket. Once your pass is first scanned for the day, it counts as a visit. Every other scan that day is to ensure your ticket is valid. Hope that makes sense...

"The Whistler Mountain Bike Park hosted the millionth UNIQUE rider today."

 you fail at reading

"The lucky millionth guest"

If you read past the first sentence you might understand that it is the 1 millionth lift ticket.

 you're quote = my quote.

Why would they say unique when they don't mean unique?
  • + 2
flag bonfire (Aug 15, 2011 at 22:34)
Because they mean lift ticket. Not unique. If you buy three tickets you count as three visits, but one unique visitor. They are talking about unique tickets, not individuals.

Yeah! last season I was living & riding two months there, and I had great memories about that. Also I went to Whistler in october '99, and I rented a Rocky Mountain bike to ride aroud Whistler, was the beginning of the bike park. No lift for ride at these time in fall... but the freeriding had a big evolution in Whistler in the last decade, and I glad to be a part of this in to differents periods of my life.

And you know, you must go to the "mecca" at least once in your life.

Congrats from Spain!

It was our one millionth unique visit. A unique visit counts as your first scan of the day. You could have done 20 laps that day, but your first scan is the one that gets recorded as a "visit".
